What is a Certified Academic Language Therapist?

Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALTs) are highly trained specialists in dyslexia therapy. In order to earn certification with ALTA, a CALT must have a master’s degree (or currently enrolled in a master’s program), undertake a minimum of 200 hours of graduate level coursework, complete a minimum of 700 hour practicum and pass a culminating national examination. Through this rigorous training, a CALT gains a deep understanding of dyslexia and acquires effective strategies to support individuals with this learning difference. CALTs are equipped with expert knowledge and techniques, such as multi-sensory instruction and structured literacy approaches, to help individuals with dyslexia develop strong foundational skills and improve their academic performance.

Academic Language Therapists bring a comprehensive and specialized approach to dyslexia therapy, focusing on individualized remediation and skill development. They are often sought after for more intensive one-on-one or small-group therapy sessions.
